Movies 1973

I've already watched a couple of movies from 1973. We have come a long way when it comes to special effects and quality. When I watch movies from 1973 I'm trying to get a feel for what was going on, how we expressed ourselves.

I initially thought that I would be watching films only from 1973. As I looked to see what was playing at the theater on January 1st, all of the films were from 1972. Clockwork Orange, shot in 1971, was in theaters for the first couple of weeks in January. I'm using the theater page from the Oakland Tribune as a reference. It seems to be the largest Newspaper available online at the Newspaper archive.

Across 110th Street was out in the theater at the start of 1973. I watched it on Hulu Prime. Most of the other films playing are not available to stream. I have a couple films in my queue for Netflix. A movie like this makes it clear why race is still a touchy issue. This movie puts racial tension right in your face.

On the first day of January 1973 we would have learned that star outfielder Roberto Clemente of the Pittsburgh Pirates was killed in a plane crash last night. He was on his way to Puerto Rico to head up relief for a recent earthquake.

Happy New Year 1973

Dick Clark hosted his second New Year's Rockin' Eve in 1973. He hosted this event for close to 40 years. A stroke in 2004 slowed him down but he came back for several more years. Dick passed away earlier this year. New Years Eve will never be the same for those of us who grew up with his New Years Eve countdown.

Here's a picture of Dick Clark taken in 1973 as he hosted American Bandstand.

Getting Ready for 1973

At the start of 1973 I was just 8 years old so the reality is I didn't experience the early seventies as an adult. As I scan through some of the events that took place in 1973, I do remember them. I'm sure they did not change the fact that I was just a kid seeing the word as a kid. I'm looking forward to digging into the news, views, events and especially the pop culture of 1973.

I'll be reading newspapers, books and magazines, watching movies and TV shows, listening to music, and more. I want to try to remember and may need to imagine what life was like back in 1973. I want to dig deep and see what I can find.

I just put a copy of The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction and on the spine is January 1973. The cover price is 75 cents. Time to look back 40 years.
